I am engaged in three projects.
One is to write a book about ethical themes in Charles Dickens' novels. Correcting the view of Leavis that these lack 'sustained seriousness' and the popular view of Dickens as no more than a moralist and a caricaturist, it would examine his understanding of virtuous characters, and of moral failings, as well as moral notions illustrated by his work, such as friendship, gratitude and redemption.
A second project is to bring together previous published work on how practical moral philosophy can and should relate to the real world. It would extend and develop work already done on ethical expertise, moral compromise, 'dirty hands', and political reasonability,
A third project is to try to develop an appreciation of how our embodiment as human beings makes a difference morally, both in the wrong that can be done to individuals, and the wrong we can do to others. It would develp ideas sketched in the previously published 'The Wrong of Rape' and 'Individual Consent: Autonomy and Self-Ownership'
